Despite becoming a member of the BRICS-led New Development Bank (NDB) over three years ago in 2021, Bangladesh has yet to benefit from any loans from the multilateral lender.
According to sources, the NDB has only approved loans for the five founding BRICS members—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—leaving Bangladesh’s requests unfulfilled.
Bangladesh officially joined the Shanghai-based lender as its sixth member in September 2021. Since then, the country has taken a cautious approach to borrowing from the NDB, as the terms of its loans are considered more expensive than those from other traditional lenders.
After joining the NDB, Bangladesh sought financing to support infrastructure development and socio-economic growth but has not yet received funding from the bank.
