Dilma Rousseff, president of the New BRICS Development Bank, has called on Uruguay’s elected president, Yamandú Orsi, to join the financial institution, which focuses on supporting emerging economies. Rousseff made the remarks to the press following a meeting with Orsi, who expressed interest in the proposal.
Rousseff said that Uruguay’s membership would be strategically important for the BRICS bank, marking it as the second Latin American country to join. The bank has already received support from nations across multiple continents.
She further explained that Uruguay’s accession has been approved by the bank’s Board of Governors, which includes Finance and Economy Ministers from various countries.
The former Brazilian president highlighted the bank’s capacity to provide loans in areas such as logistics, digital infrastructure, social sectors like education and health, and climate change mitigation. She also pointed out the institution’s ability to facilitate access to technologies that could help transform productive sectors.
Rousseff stated that the ball is now in Uruguay’s court, as the bank has already granted its approval. However, she noted that the country still needs approval from its own institutions, particularly the Parliament.
She reaffirmed that the BRICS New Development Bank is committed to serving the “Global South” and assured that it does not impose macroeconomic conditions, offering what she described as “the best rate in the world.”
