India says BRICS must make equitable carbon a priority

India’s has called on BRICS to prioritise an equitable carbon emissions allocation, NDTV reports.

As one of the world’s largest developing economies and a significant emitter of greenhouse gases, India’s stance within BRICS reflects its commitment to balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability while advocating for the interests of developing nations.

The concept of carbon space refers to the cumulative amount of greenhouse gases that can be emitted without exceeding global warming thresholds, such as those set by the Paris Agreement. Developing countries argue that they should have the opportunity to use a fair share of this carbon space to achieve developmental goals and improve living standards for their populations.

Within BRICS, India’s call resonates with other member states that face similar challenges of balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability. BRICS countries collectively represent a significant portion of the global population and economy, making their cooperation crucial in shaping global climate policies. By advocating for inclusive and fair climate action, BRICS can exert influence on global climate negotiations and promote a more balanced approach to addressing climate change.
