Malaysia plans to apply for BRICS membership in 2025, coinciding with its presidency of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Brazil’s leadership of BRICS, according to Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, as reported by the South China Morning Post.
“Yes, Russia holds the presidency now, but next year it will be Brazil. We want to join when we are the ASEAN chair, so we [will] negotiate with Brazil,” the foreign minister stated, according to Tass.
Earlier, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that the country would soon begin the formal process of joining BRICS. However, Ibrahim’s refusal to visit Russia, despite multiple invitations, raises questions. This decision stems from advice by top Malaysian diplomats who warn that such a visit might complicate Malaysia’s geopolitical stance amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Anwar emphasises Malaysia’s independent foreign policy, maintaining balanced relations with major global powers, including the U.S., China, and Russia, while prioritising national interests.
