Serbia refuses BRICS membership

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has said that his government will not pursue BRICS membership, reiterating the country’s steadfast commitment to joining the European Union, Charter 97 reports. This decision comes in response to assertions by Ivana Stradner, an expert from the American Enterprise Institute, who suggested that Vučić entertained aspirations of forsaking EU membership in favour of joining BRICS.

Expressing incredulity at Stradner’s claims, Vučić questioned the basis of her assertions, humorously pondering if his thoughts were being monitored via an implanted chip. He affirmed Serbia’s dedication to the European path while acknowledging respect for BRICS.

Vučić attributed such speculations to sources he dubbed as “Russian Telegram,” insinuating attempts to divert Serbia from its European trajectory. Regarding EU accession, Vučić emphasised that Serbia’s timeline for joining the EU is contingent upon the EU’s decisions rather than solely Serbia’s efforts. Belgrade formally applied for EU membership in 2009 and has held candidate status since 2012.
