Is China-India tension harming BRICS?

An analysis in the South Asia Journal has highlighted tensions between India and China, suggesting that the standoff is damaging BRICS.

Tensions between China and India have persisted due to a variety of geopolitical and territorial disputes. The border disagreements, particularly in the Himalayan region, have been a longstanding source of friction between the two Asian giants. Both nations have engaged in periodic standoffs and skirmishes along their disputed border, with occasional flare-ups escalating into more serious confrontations.

One significant flashpoint was the deadly clash in June 2020 in the Galwan Valley, which resulted in casualties on both sides. This incident not only heightened tensions but also underscored the underlying complexities in their relationship.

Moreover, China’s increasing assertiveness in the South China Sea and its growing influence in neighbouring countries have raised concerns in India. India’s strategic partnerships with nations like the United States, Japan, and Australia, often seen as a counterbalance to China’s influence, further exacerbate the rivalry.
