Analysis: Southeast Asia in BRICS is good for the global order

Southeast Asia’s engagement with BRICS represents a strategic alignment that goes beyond traditional alliances, according to an analysis published by Foreign Policy.

The region’s engagement with BRICS reflects a pragmatic approach to navigating global power dynamics and enhancing regional influence, the argument goes. As ASEAN continues to promote diversity and economic openness, BRICS offers a platform for Southeast Asian nations to contribute to global economic governance and address shared challenges in a multipolar world.

In 2023, BRICS made a significant move by inviting new members from North Africa and the Middle East, expanding its reach beyond its original boundaries. Although some invitations, like those extended to Argentina and Saudi Arabia, faced varying responses, the stage was set for further expansion. Now, Malaysia and Thailand have announced their intentions to apply for BRICS membership, a decision likely to be welcomed given the strategic importance of these nations in Southeast Asia.
