Bangladesh seeks China’s backing

Liu Jianchao, Minister of the International Relations Department of the Communist Party of China’s Central Committee, has reaffirmed China’s commitment to fostering extensive cooperation with Bangladesh, Weekly Blitz reports. During a courtesy call on Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin at the Bangabhaban, Liu emphasised China’s dedication to bolstering development ties and assured support for Bangladesh’s growth in various sectors.

President Shahabuddin expressed hope for a stronger partnership and sought China’s support for Bangladesh’s BRICS bid. He acknowledged China’s crucial role in implementing mega projects like the Padma Bridge Rail Link, Karnaphuli Tunnel, and Elevated Expressway, which have accelerated Bangladesh’s economic development.

Liu praised Bangladesh’s progress in infrastructure, IT, communication, energy, and tourism, recognising it as a significant stride. He also assured support for Bangladesh’s BRICS membership and the potential extension of “Duty Free Quota Free” (DFQF) facilities beyond 2026.

Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud highlighted continued Chinese support for resolving the Rohingya crisis and emphasised increased party-level engagements between the Bangladesh Awami League and the Communist Party of China. He also requested the continuation of DFQF access beyond 2026 to reduce trade imbalance by boosting exports from Bangladesh.

Mentioning the meeting between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the BRICS summit in 2023, Hasan sought Chinese support for Bangladesh to become a BRICS partner country. This aligns with Bangladesh’s strategic objectives of diversifying economic partnerships and enhancing its role in regional and global trade, supported by its robust economic growth, increasing industrialisation, and strategic location.
