Thailand has declared its strategic intent to join BRICS. A draft letter indicating this intent was approved at a cabinet meeting, according to government spokesperson Chai Wacharonke.
The BRICS coalition, known for its expansion policy, has invited non-member countries to attend the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, in October. The letter, drafted by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, underscores Thailand’s commitment to multilateralism and the increased representation of developing countries in the international system, in line with the BRICS principles.
Currently, Thailand is one of roughly 15 countries being considered for BRICS admission. Chai noted that attending the summit would provide an opportunity for Thailand to expedite its membership process and bolster its role as a leading player among developing nations.
The BRICS expansion is guided by principles and criteria focused on strengthening cooperation across political, security, economic, financial, cultural, and people-to-people domains.
Additionally, Thailand has announced its intention to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which includes 38 of the world’s most developed economies, as reported by the Bangkok Post.
