Western Sahara conflict sidelined by BRICS members

During a recent meeting in Moscow, key figures within the BRICS economic alliance reportedly rejected South Africa’s push to address the Western Sahara conflict, according to Hespress.

Held in late April, the gathering convened deputy foreign ministers and special envoys from BRICS nations to deliberate on various issues, such as the Palestinian and Sudanese situations.

Insider accounts and reports from Egyptian media suggest that several BRICS members, notably Russia, opposed South Africa’s proposal to include the Western Sahara conflict on the agenda. This resistance was interpreted as a bid to sidestep involvement in a potentially divisive and intricate matter, which could have politicised the discussions.

By thwarting South Africa’s initiative, BRICS members aimed to maintain focus on existing topics of discussion rather than embroil the alliance in a contentious issue.
