Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has highlighted the potential for closer collaboration with China, Tass reports.
Lavrov pointed to Russia’s presidency in BRICS and the establishment of an annual forum of heads of regions from Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member countries, initiated by the Chelyabinsk Region. He said new international dynamics offered further avenues for development.
In recent years, the two nations have strengthened their partnership across various domains, despite occasional tensions, especially regarding territorial disputes and asymmetries in economic power.
Economically, Russia and China have fostered robust trade relations, with bilateral trade volumes consistently on the rise. Energy cooperation, particularly in the form of natural gas and oil pipelines, underscores the depth of their economic interdependence. Additionally, collaborative ventures in sectors like technology, infrastructure, and finance have further bolstered their economic partnership.
Strategically, Russia and China have aligned on numerous geopolitical issues, often presenting a united front against perceived Western hegemony. This alignment is evident in their mutual support for initiatives like the BRICS group, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, and opposition to unilateral sanctions imposed by Western powers.
