Colombia has shown interest in joining BRICS, Tass reports.
In a statement released on the Colombian government’s website following talks between Colombian President Gustavo Petro and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, it was revealed that President Petro has expressed Colombia’s keen interest in joining BRICS as a full member promptly. President Lula, in turn, pledged to support and promote Colombia’s candidacy for membership within the influential economic alliance. This exchange underscores a significant development in regional cooperation and economic integration.
The BRICS alliance, established in 2006 and expanded in 2011 with South Africa’s inclusion, has been instrumental in fostering collaboration among its founding nations: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and now South Africa. The decision to invite additional members, including Argentina, was taken at the 2023 summit in Johannesburg. While Argentina ultimately declined the invitation Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Ethiopia formally joined the group on January 1, 2024. Colombia’s potential entry signals a growing recognition of BRICS’ significance and the desire for broader regional engagement.
