Eswatini ready to join BRICS

The Political Department of Eswatini’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation suggests that if China raises no objections, now might be the opportune moment for Eswatini to align with the BRICS alliance. This recommendation comes with a caveat: Eswatini should ensure its alignment doesn’t offend Taiwan, a close ally. While BRICS primarily focuses on economic cooperation, it has increasingly engaged in global issues, presenting Eswatini with an opening for membership.

However, caution is advised, as Eswatini may need to adjust its political stance to align with BRICS, potentially conflicting with existing diplomatic relationships. The ministry underscores the importance of strategic alignment and understanding potential repercussions.

Joining BRICS could offer Eswatini economic benefits, such as increased exports and access to diverse markets. The New Development Bank established by BRICS provides funding for infrastructure projects, fostering economic growth. Additionally, collaboration with technologically advanced BRICS members could drive innovation in Eswatini.

However, there are challenges to consider. Increased debt burdens, dependence on BRICS members, and potential resource competition are among the risks. The ministry has stressed the need for Eswatini to maintain diplomatic independence and resilience while navigating BRICS engagement.
