From Africa to Asia, 25 nations line up to join BRICS

The BRICS group of emerging economies is anticipating the addition of new members, with approximately 25 countries expressing interest, according to South Africa’s Ambassador to Russia, Mzuvukile Geoff Maqetuka. Maqetuka distinguished between indicating interest and formally applying.

Maqetuka speculated that by the Kazan Summit in October, the list of prospective members would crystallise. He suggested that Brazil would likely assume the chairmanship after Russia.

Highlighting countries like Algeria, Belarus, and Pakistan among those already in contention for membership, Maqetuka hinted at an imminent announcement regarding the admission of new members. However, he cautioned against the expectation of immediate inclusion for all interested countries, advocating instead for a gradual approach to expansion.
