Russia awards South Africa Ambassador for role in BRICS initiatives

South Africa’s BRICS Ambassador, Professor Anil Sooklal, received the prestigious Order of Friendship from Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during his visit to the country. Lavrov, addressing a gathering of BRICS Sherpas, emphasised the significance of this honour, highlighting that he was executing a vital mission under the directives of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Expressing admiration for Ambassador Sooklal’s diplomatic prowess and unwavering commitment to the collective advancement and prosperity of humanity, Lavrov underscored his principled stance and dedication to the core BRICS principles of openness, equality, and consensus.

Lavrov acknowledged Sooklal’s instrumental role in numerous significant BRICS initiatives, including the establishment of outreach-format meetings between the BRICS nations and leaders of like-minded countries, as well as the inception of the New Development Bank and the BRICS Vaccine Research and Development Centre.

Praising Sooklal as a steadfast advocate for international cooperation and understanding, Lavrov commended his deep understanding of Russian culture and traditions, cultivated through multiple visits to the country and active participation in various BRICS events during Russia’s chairmanship years.

In response, Sooklal expressed gratitude for the prestigious recognition, considering it a career highlight and a testament to South Africa’s pivotal role in the global arena, particularly within the BRICS framework. He conveyed his heartfelt appreciation to Russia for acknowledging not only his personal contributions but also South Africa’s positive engagement in advancing global initiatives.
