Listen to these really smart people to understand the world today

If, like us, you find it increasingly frustrating to wade through all the noise around global news, try the following experts and outlets to gain an idea of not only what’s happening – but what it means.

Mihaela Papa is a Senior Fellow at the Fletcher School at Tufts University, where she has co-founded and led the Rising Power Alliances project and served as faculty in sustainable development and global governance. She is also a heavyweight BRICS fundi!

David Adler is a political economist and general coordinator of the Progressive International. He has written for the Guardian on topics like The west v Russia: why the global south isn’t taking sides. Look out for his coverage of the unfolding political drama in Argentina.

John Mearsheimer, a world-renowned political scientist, recently gave an insightful lecture on the unfolding Middle East crisis as well as the implications for the war in Ukraine. Addressing an audience in Brisbane, Mearsheimer suggested that these conflicts, together with tensions with China, spell trouble for the United States. Watch the lecture here.

Yanis Varoufakis, economist and former Greek finance minister, an outspoken critic of capitalism.  Varoufakis is the definition of a public intellectual. He is a scholar with the rare ability to explain complex issues to a non-academic audience clearly and succinctly. Even if you disagree with his worldview, Varoufakis has a way of encapsulating the malaise of the 21st century global economy, enriched by a broad understanding of history and his experience in politics. He recently published a book entitled Technofeudalism: What Killed Capitalism. Go look up some of the interviews he gave on the book on YouTube, starting here.

Matt Kennard, a journalist who co-founded Declassified UK, an investigative journalism organization, has tackled weighty topics through his writing, such as the insidious role of corporations in global politics, explored in detail in his recent book Silent Coup, together with co-author Claire Provost.

Novara Media is an independent UK-based organization that seeks to provide an alternative/leftist perspective on British politics and international news. Aside from breaking news, they also feature great interviews with some of the smartest thinkers in the world today, such as a recent chat with former banker Brett Scott about the future of money. Again, even if you have the urge to shout back at the screen sometimes, their content is always relevant, thought-provoking – and even sassy at times. Available via podcast, YouTube and other media platforms.
