Brazilian president calls for BRICS summit to address Trump’s actions

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said Brazil will coordinate with other BRICS nations to craft a joint response to US President Donald Trump’s new tariffs, Reuters reported.

Earlier on Tuesday, Trump announced plans to raise tariffs on India — a fellow BRICS founding member — to 50% by late August. The move follows his decision earlier this month to impose the same 50% duties on Brazilian exports, a step Brasília condemned as an illegal attempt to interfere in its domestic affairs.

Lula said he would consult with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, followed by other BRICS leaders, to decide on a collective course of action.

According to Lula, Trump’s measures are aimed at “dismantling multilateralism” in favor of “unilateralism, where he negotiates one-on-one with other countries” to secure a US advantage.
