India has called on BRICS member states to rally behind a major international roadmap to mobilise $1.3 trillion per year by 2035 for climate action, while reaffirming its commitment to a balanced energy strategy that includes fossil fuels, hydrogen, nuclear, and renewables. The appeal was made during the 11th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting held in Brasília, according to The New Indian Express report.
Representing India, Amandeep Garg, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, warned that the current annual commitment of $300 billion from developed nations falls well short of what is required to meet the climate pledges or Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) of developing economies.
Garg urged fellow BRICS nations to endorse the ‘Baku to Belem Roadmap,’ a multilateral climate finance framework aimed at securing equitable, long-term funding for climate resilience and mitigation across emerging markets.
India also stressed the need for flexibility in the global energy transition, arguing that developing nations must be allowed to pursue diverse energy strategies suited to their specific developmental needs. Citing flagship initiatives such as the Green Grids Initiative – One Sun, One World, One Grid under the International Solar Alliance, and the Resource Efficiency and Circular Economy Industry Coalition launched during India’s G20 presidency, the Indian delegation made the case for combining innovation, circularity, and energy realism.
As The New Indian Express reported, India concluded by urging greater cooperation among BRICS nations in international climate negotiations to ensure that the Global South’s development needs are not sidelined in the race to net zero.
