ASEAN, BRICS members discuss food security in Singapore

Delegations from ASEAN and BRICS countries convened in Singapore for a significant round-table discussion focused on food security issues, Xinhua reports. The event brought together key representatives from these two influential groups, aiming to address one of the most pressing challenges facing the global community—ensuring sustainable and secure food supplies.

During the discussions, participants exchanged views on a wide range of topics, including sustainable trade practices and strategies to bolster food security across their regions. Given the diverse agricultural landscapes of ASEAN and BRICS member states, the exchange of ideas was both enriching and vital for developing comprehensive approaches to food security.

A key focus was placed on the agricultural policies currently in place within ASEAN and BRICS countries. The delegates explored how these policies can be harmonized and strengthened to support sustainable food production, distribution, and consumption. The conversation also delved into the significant challenges that threaten food security, such as climate change, supply chain disruptions, and the rising global population.

Another critical aspect of the discussion was the potential for enhanced South-to-South collaboration. Both ASEAN and BRICS share a common interest in advancing the development goals of the Global South, and food security is a vital part of this agenda. By pooling resources, expertise, and innovations, these nations aim to create a resilient food system that can withstand global challenges and provide for their populations.

The round-table concluded with a shared commitment to continue working closely together on these issues. The collaboration between ASEAN and BRICS countries marks an important step towards achieving food security, not only for their regions but for the broader international community as well.
