A recent op-ed published by Khaosod has raised an interesting question for BRICS hopeful Thailand: Will joining BRICS be a disaster? While BRICS aims to enhance cooperation among emerging economies, Thailand’s alignment with this alliance could disrupt its longstanding strategic relationships and regional stability.
Joining BRICS could present challenges for Thailand’s foreign policy, traditionally characterised by a delicate balancing act between major powers like the United States and China. As a U.S. treaty ally and a key participant in regional organizations like ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), Thailand’s entry into BRICS may complicate its diplomatic maneuvering and alignment with Western-led initiatives.
Economically, BRICS membership offers potential benefits such as increased trade opportunities and infrastructure development through initiatives like the New Development Bank. However, Thailand’s diverse economic ties with both Western and Eastern nations could be strained, affecting its strategic autonomy and economic stability.
