China and Angola upgrade diplomatic relationship

China and Angola declared an upgrade in diplomatic ties to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership. The announcement, made during a meeting between Angolan President Joao Lourenco and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, emphasised cooperation in trade, infrastructure, agriculture, and green development.

The move aims to dispel accusations of “debt trap diplomacy” levelled against China by some Western media outlets. Chinese media outlet Global Times emphasised the mutually beneficial nature of cooperation between China and Angola.

The elevation of ties coincides with growing interest in joining the BRICS bloc, with 34 nations exploring membership. Established in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining shortly after, BRICS aims to foster economic collaboration. China, through its Belt and Road Initiative, pledges to expand cooperation with Angola, emphasising mutual benefits and sustainable development.

Luis Cupenala, head of the Angola-China Chamber of Commerce, welcomed the upgraded relations, expressing hopes for increased investment in agriculture, industrialisation, and sustainable development.
