Pakistan could join BRICS in 2024, says senator

Senator Mushahid Hussain, on a visit to Moscow, asserted that Pakistan could potentially join BRICS in 2024, with the support of Russia, the current chair of BRICS. Highlighting the deepening ties between Russia and Pakistan across various domains, including energy, connectivity, education, regional security (particularly concerning Afghanistan), and multilateral cooperation within organisations such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and the United Nations, Senator Hussain stressed the conducive environment for Pakistan’s integration into BRICS.

During his visit, Senator Hussain underscored the pivotal role of four Muslim-majority states, including Pakistan, Turkey, Iran, and Saudi Arabia, in shaping global geopolitics. He commended President Putin’s stance against Islamophobia and expressed appreciation for Russia’s positive disposition towards Pakistan.

According to a report by The Dawn, Senator Hussain’s trip to Russia was at the invitation of the ruling United Russia party. He engaged in discussions with prominent Russian figures, including meetings with Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council and former President, and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Participating in the plenary session of the International Forum for Freedom of Nations, Senator Hussain delved into the dynamics of Pakistan-Russia relations, the situation in Afghanistan, and the conflict in Gaza. The discussions also encompassed the existing collaboration between Islamabad and Moscow across various sectors.

Senator Hussain also cautioned Russian counterparts about the potential ramifications of the outcome of the upcoming US presidential elections, suggesting that a victory for Donald Trump could herald significant changes in the region’s geopolitical landscape. Through such engagements and discussions, Senator Hussain’s visit aims to strengthen bilateral ties and explore avenues for enhanced cooperation between Pakistan and Russia on regional and global issues.
