Ethiopian government officials convened to deliberate on the nation’s integration into the BRICS alliance and to ensure reciprocal advantages within this collaborative framework. The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the country’s BRICS Senior Officials Committee convened for its second session, with representatives from various federal institutions in attendance.
The committee’s agenda encompassed strategies to serve Ethiopia’s national interests effectively within the BRICS structure. According to the ministry’s statement, Ethiopia intends to engage actively in BRICS affairs, prioritising partnerships, developmental collaboration, people-to-people connections, and fortifying the multilateral system.
Following its accession to the BRICS alliance, Ethiopia established both a national ministerial committee and a senior officials committee to oversee its active engagement within the group. The latter committee operates under the oversight of the former, ensuring coherent participation.
Meles Alem, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, hailed Ethiopia’s inaugural participation as a member in the BRICS Sherpas and Sous-Sherpas Meeting, held in Moscow, Russia. Alem lauded this diplomatic milestone as Ethiopia’s significant achievement of the week.
Originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, the BRICS alliance expanded its membership during the 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, in August 2023. Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates received invitations to join, with their membership becoming effective on January 1, 2024.
Ethiopia, the second most populous country in Africa, expressed its readiness to contribute constructively to the BRICS community upon its official inclusion, with a particular emphasis on fostering cooperation among developing nations.
