China set to become a global hub for biotechnology-based manufacturing by 2030

China is on course to become one of the world’s leading centres for biotechnology-driven manufacturing by 2030, with its domestic bio-manufacturing market projected to reach about US$260 billion — nearly a quarter of global output.

Investment analysts say the forecast highlights the rapid expansion of bio-manufacturing in China, where living systems such as cells and enzymes are used for large-scale processing and synthesis. These technologies are increasingly applied across pharmaceuticals, chemicals, advanced materials and energy production.

Bio-manufacturing has been designated a strategic emerging industry within China’s national development agenda. More than 20 provinces and major cities have introduced targeted support measures, including dedicated funding for research and development and incentives to accelerate industrial application.
