Russia backs Zimbabwe’s BRICS ambitions

Russia has voiced strong support for Zimbabwe’s bid to join the BRICS group of emerging economies, with Moscow’s top envoy in Harare, Ambassador Nikolai Krasilnikov.

In an exclusive interview, Ambassador Krasilnikov said Russia welcomes Zimbabwe’s engagement with BRICS—the alliance originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—and stands ready to assist in identifying the most suitable form of participation.

“Russia strongly supports Zimbabwe’s keen interest in engaging with BRICS. There are several levels of involvement, and it’s up to Zimbabwe to choose its path—whether as an observer, an invited participant at the next summit in India, or through engagement with the New Development Bank,” he said.

While emphasising that all BRICS decisions are reached by consensus, Krasilnikov reiterated Russia’s full backing for Zimbabwe’s eventual admission, describing Harare as “a formidable force on the global stage.”

“As far as Russia is concerned, we welcome Zimbabwe’s integration into the BRICS family,” the envoy affirmed.

Zimbabwe has repeatedly expressed its interest in joining the New Development Bank (NDB) — the financial arm of BRICS — with Russia, South Africa, and Brazil having previously pledged their support for Harare’s application.

Ambassador Nikolai Krasilnikov praised Zimbabwe’s foreign policy of “being a friend to all and enemy to none,” noting that it reflects the core principles of BRICS — equality, mutual respect, and non-interference.

He also revealed that Russia supports Zimbabwe’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027–2028 term, describing the country as a valued and responsible partner.

“We value Zimbabwe as a responsible member of the international community — and we need Zimbabwe in the Security Council as a trusted and constructive voice,” he said.
