Türkiye considers joining BRICS and ASEAN

Türkiye is exploring closer cooperation with international alliances such as BRICS and ASEAN, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said in an interview with Egyptian broadcaster MBC Masr.

Fidan noted that, as a non-member of the European Union, Türkiye is closely watching other regional groups that foster trade and economic growth. He pointed to BRICS, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organisation as frameworks under consideration.

Analysts say the remarks reflect Ankara’s multi-pronged foreign policy, aimed at diversifying strategic partnerships beyond traditional Western structures.

The foreign minister stressed a distinction between trade agreements and security matters, underlining the importance of regional mechanisms to tackle shared challenges such as terrorism.

His comments align with Ankara’s broader strategy to consolidate its role as an independent regional power, while maintaining ties with competing global alliances.
