BRICS leaders back India’s chairship of 2026 summit, reaffirm support for UN Security Council bid

In a unanimous decision, the leaders of BRICS member states have extended their full support to India’s Chairship of the 18th BRICS Summit, set to take place in 2026. The endorsement was formally announced in a joint declaration issued at the conclusion of the 2025 BRICS Summit.

The statement reaffirmed earlier commitments made in the Beijing (2022) and Johannesburg-II (2023) declarations. Notably, China and Russia, both permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, reiterated their support for India’s aspirations for a permanent seat on the Council — a long-standing goal of New Delhi’s global diplomatic agenda.

The declaration also acknowledged India’s leadership role in key global challenges, including climate action, inclusive multilateralism, and reform of international institutions, signaling BRICS’ continued alignment with India’s evolving strategic priorities.
