Ahead of BRICS Summit in Rio, diplomats urge stronger anti-terror collaboration

Ahead of this month’s BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, senior envoys from key member states have emphasised the need for intensified cooperation to combat terrorism and to more fully integrate the priorities of the Global South into the group’s agenda.

Amid growing momentum toward de-dollarisation—accelerated by former U.S. President Donald Trump’s protectionist tariffs—the envoys also expressed strong support for expanding the use of national currencies in intra-BRICS trade and deepening economic collaboration across the bloc.

India underscored the vital role of BRICS in delivering scalable, development-oriented solutions for the Global South, particularly in the domain of financial inclusion. It further advocated for the broader adoption of national currencies in international trade.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to travel to Brazil to attend the high-stakes summit, which will bring together the leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa to chart the future course of the alliance.

“BRICS has to get its act together and find solutions for the Global South. This requires commitment, a lot of hard work, and to be able to look deep into those issues, into the future,” said Dammu Ravi, India’s BRICS sherpa and Secretary (Economic Relations) in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
