Iran expects the BRICS group to issue a condemnation of Israel’s recent attack, according to Esmail Baghaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
Baghaei said that BRICS member states were scheduled to hold a meeting on June 16–17 to discuss the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict. He said that in recent years, both BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) have established special mechanisms to enhance cooperation among member states.
He noted that the SCO had already released a statement condemning what Iran refers to as an attack by the “Zionist regime,” and expressed hope that BRICS would follow suit. Baghaei said Iran has been in communication with BRICS members to convey its position and expectations. Tehran, he added, anticipates that BRICS will take a similar stance by acknowledging the situation in the region and condemning what Iran views as an illegal and criminal armed attack by one state against another.
