BRICS unites on climate action in Brasilia

At a high-level meeting in Brasilia, BRICS representatives came together under the BRICS Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development to strengthen joint efforts toward a more inclusive, low-carbon future. The session, hosted by Brazil’s Ministries of Environment and Climate Change, focused on advancing coordinated climate strategies across member states.

Brazil announced an ambitious new climate pledge: a 59% to 67% reduction in net greenhouse gas emissions by 2035 (compared to 2005 levels), targeting between 850 million and 1.05 billion tonnes of CO₂ equivalent. To meet these goals, Brazil is emphasizing native vegetation restoration, including the recovery of degraded pasturelands — part of a long-term plan to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

BRICS delegations endorsed several new frameworks for climate cooperation:

🔹 Climate Leadership Agenda – Reinforcing full implementation of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
🔹 Intellectual Property Report – Exploring options to improve climate tech transfer within BRICS
🔹 Carbon Accounting Principles – Promoting fair, inclusive, and transparent climate metrics
🔹 Recognition of Carbon Markets – Supporting market-based tools to accelerate global emissions reductions
