In a move to bolster its renewable energy sector, Indonesia has extended an invitation to BRICS nations to invest in its clean energy initiatives. This call aligns with Indonesia’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060 and reflects its recent accession to the BRICS alliance in January 2025 .
According to Tempo the call was made by Yuliot Tanjung, Yuliot, Secretary of Indonesia’s Directorate General of New, Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation, emphasised the nation’s openness to collaboration in various energy domains, including nuclear energy, smart grids, bioenergy, hydrogen, ammonia, carbon capture and storage, as well as off-grid solar power plants and hydropower. He highlighted the importance of tailored approaches to energy transition, stating that it should reflect national conditions, development priorities, and technological sovereignty.
Indonesia’s renewable energy potential is vast, with significant untapped resources in geothermal, solar, and hydropower. However, challenges such as regulatory hurdles, financing constraints, and infrastructure limitations have impeded rapid development. To address these issues, Indonesia is seeking not only investment but also the sharing of best practices and technological expertise from BRICS partners.
The New Development Bank (NDB), established by BRICS countries, has expressed interest in financing renewable energy and infrastructure projects in Indonesia. Discussions have included potential investments in waste-to-energy conversion projects, aligning with Indonesia’s goals to enhance energy resilience and sustainability .
This initiative also complements Indonesia’s participation in the ASEAN Power Grid project, aiming to integrate regional power infrastructure and promote the use of renewable energy sources across Southeast Asia .
By inviting BRICS nations to invest in its renewable energy sector, Indonesia is taking a significant step towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy future, while also strengthening its position within the global energy landscape.
