Ethiopia and South Africa agree to work together under the BRICS+ Business Council framework to boost trade and investment.
The commitment to work more closely together emerged from a recent high-level meeting between Ethiopia’s Ambassador to South Africa, Delil Kedir, and Mtho Xulu, Chairperson of the Trade & Investment Working Group of the South Africa Chapter of the South African BRICS Business Council (SABBC) who also serves as the President of the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI).
The discussion focused on aligning bilateral economic interests within the broader objectives of the BRICS+ platform.
Kedir outlined key investment opportunities in Ethiopia and pointed out the value of integrating these into BRICS-led initiatives. In response, Xulu affirmed SACCI’s commitment to leveraging structures such as the SABBC to unlock new avenues for business partnerships.
Both parties recognised the potential of the BRICS framework to generate trade diversification and regional economic integration.
As part of this collaboration, they agreed to establish a joint institutional mechanism to facilitate business-to-business (B2B) engagement, promote private sector cooperation, and lay the groundwork for a joint business council.
This partnership marks a significant step toward positioning Ethiopia more prominently within the BRICS+ network and expanding South Africa’s trade footprint in East Africa.
Upcoming initiatives include high-level B2B meetings and coordinated efforts to enhance cross-border commercial linkages under the SABBC umbrella.
