When BRICS named Uganda as one of its 13 new partner countries, questions arose about the significance of this partnership, particularly given Uganda’s unique position within East Africa.
Uganda stands out as the only country in the East African Community (EAC) to be chosen for this status, despite Kenya’s dominant role in the region in terms of economic strength, population, and development.
Within Eastern Africa, Ethiopia is currently the only full member, having joined earlier this year alongside Egypt.
As outlined by BRICS, the Russian presidency will consult with these Partner Countries to formalize membership, though a specific date hasn’t been set. Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira indicated that full membership could be established by the end of the year or early next year, with Brazil taking over the leadership role.
The BRICS countries have already reached an agreement on the criteria and principles that will guide expansion, paving the way for further integration and collaboration.
