Russia prepares for biggest summit yet as BRICS leaders gather

The upcoming BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, is set to be a major foreign policy event, gathering leaders from 24 countries and delegations from 32 nations, Daily News Egypt reports.

Scheduled from October 22-24, the summit is expected to be the largest international summit ever held in Russia.

According to Russian presidential aide Yury UshakovUshakov,  the summit will have two key components: the BRICS member meetings under the theme “Strengthening Multilateralism for Equitable Global Development and Security,” and BRICS+ meetings focused on “BRICS and the Global South: Building the Future of the World Together.” Representatives from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America will also participate in the BRICS+ discussions.

“Russia is proud to take a leading role in BRICS, having been involved from the group’s inception,” Ushakov said.

In 2024 alone, Russia has hosted over 200 BRICS-related events, including more than 20 at the ministerial level.

On the topic of BRICS expansion, Ushakov said that Russia supports the inclusion of new partner countries, suggesting the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) as potential members, as well as the Republic of Indonesia.

Currently, the BRICS association consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, and the UAE. In September, President Vladimir Putin noted that 34 additional states have expressed interest in joining BRICS.

Ushakov also confirmed that nine BRICS leaders will attend the summit, with Saudi Arabia represented by its Foreign Minister, Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.
