The Kremlin has expressed its regret over Argentina’s decision not to join the BRICS group of developing nations. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov addressed reporters, acknowledging Argentina’s sovereign right to make such decisions while expressing hope for a change of heart.
“Of course, this is regrettable, but this is the sovereign right of Argentina, and we respect any decision of Buenos Aires. We, in turn, as far as Argentina is concerned, hope that over time the leadership of this country may consider it more profitable for itself to return to BRICS,” Peskov said.
Argentina’s incoming Foreign Minister Diana Mondino had announced in November that her country would not be joining the BRICS grouping, opting instead to strengthen ties with the United States under President Javier Milei.
In addition to Argentina, the BRICS bloc has expanded, extending invitations to Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates in August of the previous year. The move aims to reshape a world order dominated by the West, which the BRICS nations perceive as outdated.
Peskov revealed that Russia continues to engage with Saudi Arabia regarding its potential BRICS membership. He emphasized that discussions on this matter were part of President Vladimir Putin’s recent visit to Riyadh.
“We are continuing our contacts with Riyadh. This topic was also touched upon during President (Vladimir) Putin’s recent visit to Riyadh,” Peskov informed reporters. “Therefore, we proceed from the fact that Saudi Arabia is focused on membership of BRICS. We don’t have any other information yet.”
