No formal notification from Argentina about BRICS, says South African govt spokesman

Argentina has not formally applied to withdraw from BRICS, said Clayson Monyela, a spokesperson for South Africa’s department of international relations.

Reports said Argentina planned to reject an invitation to join the global alliance, made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

In a social media post on Friday morning, Monyela said: “There’s no formal notification by Argentina to withdraw from BRICS.”

He added that Argentina was currently represented at a BRICS Sherpa meeting in Durban. Monyela pointed out on X, formerly known as Twitter, that Argentina’s newly elected president Javier Milei had been highly critical of Brazil during his election campaign but had invited President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to his inauguration on Dec. 10.
