Sri Lanka intends to formally apply for BRICS membership at the upcoming summit in Kazan, Russia, according to government spokesperson Vijitha Herath.
“We plan to request Sri Lanka’s membership in BRICS, and during a recent meeting with the Indian foreign minister, we sought India’s support for our bid,” Herath was quoted as saying by the Newsfirst website.
He also noted that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will be unable to attend the summit, so the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will represent Sri Lanka at the official level.
