South African foreign minister Naledi Pandor visits US amid tensions over Gaza policy

South Africa’s International Relations Minister Naledi Pandor has embarked on a fence-mending mission to Washington following tensions over Pretoria’s policy on Gaza.

In an interview with VOA in the US capital, Pandor accused the US Congress of adding South Africa to a new “axis of evil.”

During her visit, Pandor emphasised the importance of strengthening diplomatic ties between South Africa and the United States. She underscored the historical significance of this relationship and highlighted the need for constructive engagement to address common challenges and pursue shared interests. Pandor expressed optimism about the potential for collaboration on issues such as climate change, economic development, and regional security.

In her interview with Al Jazeera, Pandor addressed questions regarding South Africa’s approach to international affairs and its role in promoting peace and stability in Africa.

A bill was recently submitted to the United States Congress calling for a full review of the country’s bilateral relationship with South Africa following its application to the International Court of Justice to oppose Israel’s attack on the Gaza Strip and to call for a ceasefire. The court ruled that it was plausible that Israel has committed acts of genocide against Gaza.

South Africa has also used its role in BRICS as a platform to further the Palestinian cause.
