Colombia strengthens ties with Russia as it seeks BRICS membership

Colombia has expressed its intent to join the BRICS group as part of a broader strategy to diversify its international partnerships and explore new funding avenues. Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo confirmed the country’s interest during his visit to Moscow, highlighting ongoing talks with the Shanghai-based BRICS New Development Bank—now led by Dilma Rousseff—as a key aspect of Colombia’s outreach.

Murillo’s visit also served to deepen Colombia’s bilateral relationship with Russia, setting the stage for the 90th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations in 2025.

Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s Foreign Minister, said both countries would work to revive a bilateral commission that aims to foster cooperation in areas such as trade, economics, and science. Cultural and academic exchanges were also part of the discussions, with Murillo being honoured as an Emeritus Professor by a Russian university.

In 2025, Colombia and Russia will celebrate 90 years of diplomatic relations.
