President of Zimbabwe Emmerson Mnangagwa has revealed that he discussed his country’s aspiration to join the BRICS group during a face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the side lines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
In an interview with Russia’s state-owned news agency TASS, Mnangagwa stated, “Yes, I spoke about this with President Putin in a one-on-one meeting. I told him that I had discussed this topic before with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.”
The Zimbabwean leader expressed confidence that none of the BRICS members are opposed to Zimbabwe’s potential membership. “All of them are very, very supportive,” Mnangagwa told TASS.
The BRICS group, initially formed in 2009, has emerged as an influential group of major emerging economies, representing a significant portion of the global population and economic output. Zimbabwe’s interest in joining the group aligns with its ambitions to enhance its international standing and economic cooperation.
